Prostatitis

If you’re a man suffering from a fever, lower back pain and frequent or painful urination, should you see a doctor? Probably, since those are the symptoms of a little-known but serious condition called prostatitis, which affects half of all men in the United States during their lifetime.

Prostatitis is the inflammation of the prostate gland. Different prostate disorders can have similar symptoms, but prostatitis is not an indicator of prostate cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among in developed countries.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common diseases affecting the prostate gland. BPH occurs when there is an increase in the number of the smaller glands and stroma of the prostate gland, which causes the prostate to become enlarged.BPH is a type of tumour that is benign or non-cancerous. It is the most common benign tumour in men, and it becomes much more common as men get older.

One study has shown that BPH is present in 20% of men aged 41-50 years, 50% of men aged 51-60 years, and over 90% of men older than 80 years , although the proportion of men with symptoms was much less.

BPH is not a life-threatening condition, but if left untreated for a prolonged period of time, it has the potential to cause problems with the function of the bladder, and less commonly, the kidneys.
