Overstrain or Overrest Affect the physiological function

April 7, 2008 – 10:27 am

Diet, work and rest are the fundamental conditions for human beings to live and maintain good health. Improper diet and maladjustment of work and rest will affect the physiological functions of the viscera and reduce the organism’s resistance to diseases, thus becoming pathogenic factors.

Maladjustment of work and rest includes overstrain and overrest.

Overstrain includes physical overstrain, mental overstrain and sexual overstrain,

Physical overstrain
Referring to the overstrain from physical labour. The chapter “Discussion on Etiology, Pathogenesis and Characteristics of Various Pains” (Chapter 39) in Plain Questions says: “Over-exertion results in qi exhaustion.” In mild cases there may appear lassitude, deficiency of qi and disinclination to talk and mental fatigue; in severe cases, there will be injury of tendon, muscle and bone, causing lumbago, arthralgia and myalgia of the limbs.

Mental overstrain
Referring to the overstrain from mental labour. Mental overstrain may consume and impair the heart-blood and impair the spleen-qi, causing palpitation, amnesia, insomnia, dreaminess, anorexia, abdominal distension, loose stool and so on.

Sexual overstrain
Referring to the intemperance in sexual life. Proper sexual life does no harm to health and instead is helpful to sleep and rest; but indulgence in sexual activities can exhaust and impair the kidney essence, causing lassitude in the loins and knees, dizziness, tinnitus and listlessness; and impotence, spermatorrhea or no ejaculation in males, menoxenia and leukorrhagia in females.

Overrest

Overrest refers to excessive rest and comfort-No labour and exercises can lead to impeded circulation of qi and blood, flaccidity and crispness of tendon, muscle and bone, and the stagnation of the spleen and stomach, manifested as listlessness, loss of appetite, lassitude, shortness of breath on exertion, palpitation or obesity. It also cripples the body’s resistance to diseases and makes the body susceptible to the attack or exopathogens.
