Myasthenia gravis (MG) is not an untreatable disease.

The major methods treating MG were anti-cholinesterase agents, corticosteroids therapy, chemotherapy, plasma-exchange, lymphocyte exchange, thymectomy, radiation of thymus, intravenous infusion of large amount of gamma-globulin, immuno-absoption, stem cell transplantation, anti-idiotypic therapy, immuno-modulators, Chinese herbs and other ancillary methods,

Professor Deng Tietao’s treated myasthenia gravis (MG) with traditional Chinese medicine since 1980. Professor Deng believes that MG is caused by asthenia of spleen and stomach, that is, deficiency of spleen-gi and stomach-qi. Based on the above-mentioned point of view, Professor Deng maintains that MG should be diagnosed, according to TCM zheng-differentiation, as “spleen-asthenia” and its manifestations of five viscera should be taken into account. To treat MG, Professor Deng applies the method of invigorating the spleen and benefiting the essence, and uses Radix Astragali seu Hedysari as the major ingredient in the Decoction for Strengthening Muscles and Invigorating Power. He also emphasizes that to completely cure the disease, the patient should keep on with the treatment for one or two years after the clinical manifestations disappear.
