Beijing University of Chinese Medicine

Founded in 1956 the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is one of the earliest established traditional Chinese medical institutions for higher learning in the Peopleâ⿬⿢s Republic of China. It is the only traditional Chinese medical higher learning institution that has a place in the â⿬ſ211 Projectâ⿬ for national development. The former Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and the former Beijing College of Acupuncture, Orthopedics and Traumatology merged into the new Beijing University of Chinese Medicine on July 31st, 2000, and became a priority university directly under the supervision of the Ministry of Education.

At present, the University consists of the following schools and departments: School of Preclinical Medicine, School of Chinese Materia Medica, School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion & Tuina, School of Administration, School of Traditional Chinese Nursing, International School, School of Distance Education, School of Continuing Studies, School of Chinese Clinical Medicine, Department of Humanities & Social Science and Department of Chinese Medicine for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.

The university is striving to build a professional training system, emphasizing on high-level education ready for the new century. There are 9 majors in the university, namely, Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Acupuncture, Moxibustion & Tuina, Public Industry Management (Health Industry Management), Business Administration (Chinese Herbal Medicine Business Management), Traditional Chinese Nursing, Medical English and Law (related to medicine), among which the 7-year program of the Chinese Medicine major, includes 9 training classes geared towards different directions such as traditional Chinese clinical medicine, clinical research, integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, acupuncture and tuina oriented towards international exchange, etc. These majors for different purposes are jointly trained with institutions such as the Nankai University, Tsinghua University, University of International Business and Economics, Beijing Normal University, and Sino-Japan Friendship Hospital.

Up to September 2003, there are a total of 16,160 students in the campus, among which 5,950 are undergraduates and vocational training students, 688 masterâ⿬⿢s degree candidates, 356 doctorate degree candidates, 758 foreign students from 41 countries and regions, 416 students from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao, 4,897 distance education students and 3,095 continuing education students.

The university is among the first batch of traditional Chinese medical institutions to establish the Ph.D. program and the post-doctoral research stations. The 3 first-grade subjects, namely Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, and Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, have the right to grant doctorate degree, so do all the second-grade subjects for masterâ⿬⿢s degree. The university now has 6 state-level subjects, 10 ministry- and bureau-level subjects, 3 Beijing municipality-level subjects, with 3 post-doctorate stations in Chinese Medicine. The key subjects of our university is in the leading position among the countryâ⿬⿢s traditional Chinese medical institutions.

The university has one key laboratory of the level of the Ministry of Education, 2 key laboratories of the Beijing municipality level, and 2 key research centers of the level of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The university is a base for cultivating our countryâ⿬⿢s science and life science professionals. We also have â⿬ſthe Research Center for Key Technology of Chinese Pharmaceuticals and Drug Innovation by the Ministry of Educationâ⿬, â⿬ſthe Research Center for Web Cooperation in Traditional Chinese Medicine Modernization of the Tertiary Education Institutionsâ⿬ and â⿬ſthe National University of Science & Technology built through joint efforts the university and the Beijing Normal university â⿬.

Founded in 1958, the affiliated Dongzhimen Hospital is a base of clinical education, medical treatment and research of the university. With nearly half a century’s hard work, it has developed into a first-grade, first-class general hospital with sturdy medical, teaching, and research potentials, complete departments and facilities, assuring general service capabilities with distinctive features of the specialty departments of traditional Chinese medicine. The affiliated Dongfang Hospital began its service in December, 1999. It has now developed into a state-grade modernized general hospital of traditional Chinese medicine with comfortable wards, reasonable design, hi-tech facilities, quality personnel, high medical standards, outstanding traditional Chinese medical features, scientific management, and general service abilities.

The pharmaceutical plant, built in 1958, possesses a solid technical team, with complete manufacturing facilities and improved technology, and has already been acknowledged with the GMP standards for a small dosage injection. Its reputable product, â⿬ſQing Kai Ling Injectionâ⿬ has been appointed as the first-choice medicament in the traditional Chinese medicine hospitals in the country for 3 years since 1992.

In the 48 years since the founding of the university, it has trained more than 20,000 traditional Chinese medical professionals of different levels and 2,342 students from 87 countries and regions of the world. In recent years, the university has eventually established 40 cooperative projects with 22 countries and regions. It has cooperated with universities and academic groups of 12 countries and regions in running branch schools and clinics.

The university publishes state-level, first-class academic periodicals entitled â⿬ſJournal of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicineâ⿬, â⿬ſJournal of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (Clinical Edition)â⿬ and â⿬ſTraditional Chinese Medicine Educationâ⿬. They are important windows for traditional Chinese medical academic exchange.

SUBJECTS STRENGTHENING
The university was included in the â⿬ſ211 Projectâ⿬for national development in 1997. At present, it has 6 state-level key subjects, 10 ministry-level key subjects, 5 ministry-bureau-level key supporting subjects and 3 Beijing municipality-level key subjects, which is in the lead among the country’s traditional Chinese medical institutions in the number of key subjects. In addition, a development system integrating the key subjects, key laboratories and specialized medical centers has been formed.

State-level key subjects: Chinese Internal Medicine, Basic Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Diagnostics, Chinese Materia Medica, Study of Traditional Chinese Medical Formulae and Basics of the Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine.
Ministry-level key subjects: Chinese Internal Medicine on Cerebropathy , Chinese Internal Medicine on Respiratory Diseases, Chinese Internal Medicine on Endocrinology, Herbal Pharmacology, Chinese Clinical Materia Medica, Chinese Herbs Pharmacognostics, Basic Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Hematology of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Diagnostics and Acupuncture and Moxibustion.

Ministry-bureau-level key supporting subjects: Basics of the Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Study of Traditional Chinese Medical Formulae, Basics of Traditional Chinese Clinical Medicine, Health Preservation with Traditional Chinese Medicine, Health Industry Management of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Beijing municipality-level key subjects: Traditional Chinese Medicine Surgery, Basics of Traditional Chinese Clinical Medicine and History of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Literature.

Key subjects of theâ⿬ſ10th0th Five-Year Plan Periodâ⿬: Traditional Chinese Science of Syndromes, Basic Study of Traditional Chinese Formulae, Traditional Chinese Medical Science of Body-Quality, Pathogenesis of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Chinese Herbal Resources Engineering, Chinese Medicament Pharmaceutical Engineering and Chinese Internal Medicine.
SCHOOL OF PRECLINICAL MEDICINE
There are the following departments: Dept. of Basic Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dept. of Traditional Chinese Diagnostics , Dept. of Study of Traditional Chinese Medical Formulae and Materia Medica , Dept. of Medical Morphology , Dept. of Human Functions, Dept. of Basics of Traditional Chinese Clinical Medicine, Dept. of Medical History and Humanities, Dept. of Etiology, and Dept. of Rehabilitation, with 2 laboratory centers (research, teaching), and 6 research centers. In the school there are 62 professors, 69 associated professors, 36 doctorate degree instructors, 34 maste’srdegree instructors. Doctorate and master’s degree can be conferred by 7 programs and 2 post-doctorate stations have been established. More than 30 subjects, such as the Basic Theories of Traditionalÿ 
ÿ 
Chinese Medicine, Basics of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, and the commonly required basic subjects are included. The school now has 4 state-level key subjects, 2 Beijing municipality-level key subjects, 3 ministry-bureau-level key subjects , 3 ministry-bureau-level supporting subjects, and 2 university-level key subjects. It is responsible for 32 research programs of the state â⿬ſ973â⿬,â⿬ſ863â⿬,and the State Natural Science Funded Key Programs, and programs funded by other sources. Recently, more than 20 programs have been given awards .ÿ 
SCHOOL OF CHINESE MATERIA MEDICA

There are 7 departments, namely, Chinese Herbal Pharmacognostics, Chinese Herbal Chemistry, Chinese Herbal Pharmacology, Chinese Herbal Pharmaceuticals, Chinese Clinical Materia Medica and Basic Course Teaching Department, with 3 centers, namely, Center for Chinese Herbal Basics and New Herbal Medicines, Analysis and Testing Center and the Practical Teaching Management Center. There are 20 professors, 26 associate professors, 12 doctorate degree instructors, 51 master ’s degree instructors, and 5 national new drug appraisal experts in the school at present. The Chinese Materia Medica subject is presently a state-level key subject and a first-grade subject granting the doctorate degree and a Chinese Materia Medica post-doctorate station has been set up. In addition, there are 3 bureau-level key subjects. The school is responsible for offering the courses of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Chinese Materia Medica, Pharmacology, Herbal Pharmacology and the Professional Basics of Chinese Materia Medica, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Chinese Clinical Materia Medica (7-year program), and Biological Pharmaceuticals to students. The school has a Beijing municipality-level key laboratory, an Internet Cooperation Web-Center for Chinese Herbal Modernization of the Ministry of Education, a Research Center for Chinese Herbal Pharmaceuticals and Key Technical Engineering Research Center for Innovation of New Drugs. In recent years, it assumes the responsibility for more than 50 research programs of all levels, such as the State â⿬ſ973â⿬, â⿬ſ863â⿬ and the National Natural Science Foundation of China for Key Programs. It has been granted 11 state-level, provincial- and ministry-level technology advancement awards, and it has got 5 patents rights and 14 science and technology achievement transfers. It is in the lead of the country ’s research in the fields of Chinese herbal resources, evaluation of the compound material foundation of Chinese herbal medicines and their effects, digital Chinese herbs and Chinese herbal information research, new Chinese herbal medicament research, etc.

SCHOOL OF ACUPUNCTURE, MOXIBUSTION & TUINA
It is composed of the Basic Course Teaching Department and the Clinical Teaching Department. There are at present 8 professors, 20 associate professors, 3 doctorate degree instructors, and 20 master ’s degree instructors in the school. It has a bureau-level key subject. In recent years, it has been responsible for 18 research programs of all levels, such as the ministry-bureau-level. It has been granted 11 state-, provincial-, andÿ ÿ 
ministry-level awards. It is in the lead in the acupuncture point researches at home and abroad, wherein ‘Disorders along the 14 Channels â⿬,â⿬ſClinical and Experimental Research into the Integration of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs in Treatment of Cerebrovascular Diseases â⿬,â⿬ſEffects of Qigong on Electroencephalogramâ⿬,â⿬ſAcupuncture Analgesia â⿬,etc. have already reached a leading level at home and abroad.

SCHOOL OF ADMINISTRATION
In the school there are 4 departments, namely, Dept. of Public Industry Management, Dept. of Business Management, Dept. of Common Management Courses, and Dept. of Common Basic Learnings. There is also an On-Service Training Center, a Capital Calculation Center for Hospitals of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a Research Center for Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a Training Center for Management Abilities, and a Research Laboratory for Management Sciences. There are 4 professors, 12 associate professors, and 7 master ’sÿ ÿ  degree instructors at present. The school has a complete research and teaching system for the management sciences, which is in the lead in the traditional Chinese medical industry. It assumes the responsibility for several health management research programs of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ministry of Health. It has a permanent mission for editing the National Traditional Chinese Medicine Statistics and for checking the capital calculation of the national traditional Chinese medical institutions.

SCHOOL OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE NURSING
It is composed of 4 departments, namely, Dept. of Basic Nursing Study, Dept. of Clinical Nursing, Dept. of Nursing in Communities, and Dept. of Humanity Science. The faculty includes a professor , a master ’s degree instructor and 3 associate professors. There are 2 educational levels, one is for bachelor ’s degree and the other for vocational training. The majors include ’s Traditional Chinese Nursing, Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Nursing and International-Oriented Nursing.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

It is especially established for the admission, education, and accommodation management of foreign students. It mainly accepts foreign undergraduates and long-and short-term visiting students in the majors of Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica and Acupuncture, Moxibustion & Tuina. Courses for the short-term visiting students can be offered in Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, Russian or Spanish. The school also offers pre-undergraduate classes and Chinese language classes. In total, it has trained 2,342 foreign students from 87 countries and regions, and accepted 2,300 short-term visiting students since its establishment.
THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCE
Founded on July 9th, 2003, the Dept. of Humanities and Social Science is based on the former Depts. of Social Science and Foreign Languages. Now, it has 43 faculty members. Among them, there are one professor and 17 associate professors, have the higher academic title, sixteen teachers have master ’sdegree or master ’s degree equivalent. It is engaged in 10 research programs of the the university level. At present it has two majors Medical English and Law (related to medicine). Started admiffing students in 2003.
DEPARTMENT OF CHINESE MEDICINE FOR TAIWAN, HONG KONG & MACAO

Formerly known as the Training Center for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Students Founded in 1997, its main task is to admit students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. Now there are 416 students, majoring in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Moxibustion & Tuina and Chinese Materia Medica. The credit system is adopted for the students and the diploma is issued when they complete all the course study up to the requirement. After graduation one year internship will be arranged and the graduates are qualified to take the physician ’s examination for a license.ÿ 

SCHOOL OF CONTINUING STUDIES
It was formerly called the Adult Education Department. In the twenty years since its establishment, it has strictly followed the objectives of the school, updated the teaching contents and improved teaching standards and cultivated a large amount of traditional Chinese medical talented professionals for the society. The school now has such majors as bachelor ’s degree major for high school graduates and Chinese Medicine and Chinese Materia Medica bachelor ’s degree major for those who have already completed vocational training in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, Acupuncture, Moxibustion & Tuina, Traditional Chinese Nursing, Chinese Orthopedics and Traumatology, and Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. The school has established 10 correspondence education stations in 8 provinces and cities.

SCHOOL OF DISTANCE EDUCATION
Established in August 2000, it is a pioneer school among the traditional Chinese medical institutions approved by the Ministry of Education to establish modern distance education. Its mission is to offer college-level courses of traditional Chinese medicine to adults and to finish the degree education by means of on-line lectures, integrated different teaching methods, such as group teaching, question answering, tests and theses defending.ÿ ÿ ÿ

Through out over 10 years of hard work, our aim is to develop the university into a world-renowned, first-class traditional Chinese medicine university.
